and Irish Authors in Europe
------
During the period (1500-1900) when printed paper was the only means by
which complex texts and ideas could be carried in quantity across time and
distance, everyone believed that reading helped to determine the
mentalities of society. William St Clair, using quantified data on
production, prices, sales, and timing of access, of the actual books read
from the 1790s to the 1830s in the English-speaking world, suggests how we
can develop theories and models for understanding cultural production,
consumption, and consequences.
William St Clair FBA, Senior Research Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge,
is author of several books on the history and literature of the early
nineteenth century. The title of his talk refers to his recent book, _The
Reading Nation in the Romantic Period_ (Cambridge University Press, 2004).
