Dear Katerina,
I would suggest, in general, deriving MNI's from molar counts, both isolated
and in situ, by taking into account whether each molar is upper or lower, its
side and placement in the jaw (i.e., M1, M2...). The molars of micromammls are
the most diagnostic to taxa and likely to provide the highest MNI in an
archaeological assemblage where differential preservation of skeletal elements
may be marked. This is also likely to provide a more staightforward
relationship between MNI and sample size (NISP). But, this suggestion is based
on an assumption of relatively even recovery across taxa which is achieved by
fine sieving with 1 mm or less mesh screens. Use of more coarse meshs will
affect frequencies of elements significantly and differentially and counting
methods must take this into consideration.
All the best

Dear Everyone,
Is there an established method of counting MNI for rodents/insectivores
according crania?Does someone have to take in mind right/left jaw numbers and
divide by 2 or countaccording to isolated molars, or both?
Any goodreference on that?
Thanks,
Katerina
