This idea works well on the inbound journey, when infrequent rural buses
feed into high frequency city centre shuttles. It doesn't work quite so
well for outbound journeys, when passengers have to allow extra time for
the connection into the infrequent rural service.
We have this very situation now in Manchester with the two high
frequency Metroshuttle bus services. They are free, and they link the
railway stations, the bus stations and the coach station with the main
office and shopping areas. Of course, if we could only tackle the
chronic road congestion caused by cars, then the shuttles would stand a
better chance of running to time and delivering their passengers to
stations in time for outbound trains.
