Dear Colleague
We currently have a vacancy for an economist / social scientist to organise
and run surveys to investigate the economic value of tourism and how income
to local communities may be enhanced within the Cayos Cochinos, Northern
Honduras this coming summer (13th July to 23 August inclusive).
The data collected would form part of a $1 million GEF application for the
Cayos Cochinos currently in preparation by Operation Wallacea / Oxford
University. The primary objective is the development of a standardised
monitoring programme for the collection of data on sources of income
(fishing, tourism, protected area employment etc) from communities within
the Park that can be repeated each year. In addition, data on the income
foregone by having fishing limited in the protected area is to be
quantified from interview data. Hopefully the study could also look at ways
in which this income could be generated and spread amongst the community.
This study would be among the first to attempt to quantify the community
income levels that have to be achieved in order to achieve support for the
protected area.
The successful applicant will additionally be responsible for supervising a
small number of dissertation students working on this project. This is a
voluntary post, however all food and accommodation costs in Honduras will
be covered by the project.
