Priorities of role
Identify the information needs of staff at The Institute, both
corporate and scientific, and the owners of this information. Ensure
that relevant, timely, high quality information is provided to all staff
via the relevant channels e.g. Intranet, Internet, magazines, e-mails.
Ensure clarity and coordination of the various media channels and
establish procedures to ensure effective feedback (meetings, staff
attitude survey etc)
Carry out a full review of The Institute's intranet focusing on both
the structure and content to improve accessibility, usability and
reliability and meet recognised quality standards.
Develop resources to support scientific communication - both content
(such as Power-point presentations/DVD's of key talks, for
repeat/external use/storing on intranet, briefing packs on
key/controversial issues for staff presenting externally) and skills for
post doctoral workers and students, such as provision of workshops in
submitting scientific papers and presenting at conferences.
Develop and implement a policy (with appropriate briefing/ training) on
the effective use of e-mail, ensuring accurate distribution lists and a
reduction in the inappropriate use of e-mail.
Establish a system for joint staff communication/heads of agreement,
where appropriate, with partners (e.g. funders, NHS) with agreed roles
and responsibilities, messages and methods.
Develop skills/ resources among existing staff so that internal
communications initiatives can continue after the role of internal
communications manager lapse (2 years)
Manage the communications projects necessary to support the Institute
in achieving Investors in People (IiP) accreditations
Review 'Link' - the in-house magazine produced jointly with the
Royal Marsden Hospital - to consider costs, readership, readership
preferences and resource implications
Establish a communications steering board to enable The Institute to
plan and prioritise its internal communication.
