Ok, Andrew, I'll let slip that I can't help admiring his sheer guts when I
watch him play, and he's mightily talented, though I prefer the grace of
some other players, eg Safin and Federer last night. What I really, really,
really can't stand is the commentating. I don't know if you get John
Alexander down your way, but he is so one-eyed that it makes me want to
shoot the tv. He said three times the other night (I kid you not) re a
missed shot by LL: "That would have been a straight winner, if it wasn't for
the net!" Yeah, and I would have been a great soccer player, if it wasn't
for the fact that I can't kick a ball...
And in case anybody here thinks this is nothing to do with writing - well,
this might sound weird, but watching those players slug it out through thick
and thin, foul weather and injuries, victory and defeat, has really helped
in this final phase of the novel. Corporatised to the hilt, ridiculous
amounts of money, yes, yes, I know: and it's a nonsense. But an important
nonsense...
(At least, that's my excuse. And I'm still going for Roddick, unpatriotic
shit that I am.)
Cheers
