Yeah, that 43.2 (don't forget the .2!) mile schlepp is not awesomely
fun-filled. What saves it is that the traffic is USUALLY bearable and fast.
Nobody could live in my version of the Ghost Sonata for too long.
That's why I look to Terri Gross, wearing a set of angel's wings, to
deliver my perturbed spirit from the kingdom of Drek.
Where else but in America could some guy who used to be hugely talented
make a fortune on his obsession with revivified death and call the
latest installment The Corpse Bride? You see that, the first question
is "WTF, dude??" Actually, after watching the trailer, the skeleton dog
is actually sort of cute, but then again I like dogs.
I can't get Fox News because we have what we call "poverty cable." We
learned about it from my girlfriend's next-younger sister. It's not
even advertised: you have to know it's there and ask for it. No premium
News or movie stations. No Sopranos, Sex In The City, or Six Feet Under
(these facts sadden me, for real). We use it to get to the cable
modem. But having heard some soundbytes of Bill O'Reilly, I can say he
is one of the few men I would really like to hurt. No spin there either.
My younger son burned me a CD of a "comic" named Bill Hicks, who died of
cancer at age 33 in 1994. Hicks could have given Lenny Bruce a run for
his money--extraordinarily funny, scatological, a vicious and lasered-in
political focus, a sense of who sold out and how (you have to him on Jay
Leno)--all of it done at a pitch of nutsiness that put me in danger
because I was driving the damned car at the time and was laughing rather
hard. No mistakes on Jersey roads. This state, as we know, is the
place where the weak are killed and eaten.
