Thanks for putting all that reality of the person out there, along with
what we know of him as a poet, Mark.
His importance to a strand of Canadian poetry cannot be overstated;
teaching at University of British Columbia in 1962-3, & then
participating in the great Summer Session of 1963 when he & others had
such an impact on a number of then young writers. Sadly I was at the
other end of the country then, & only met him the once, but his innate
generosity came through to me. And the reading was, as I said when we
were discussing him a few weeks ago, simply stunning, & deeply intimate
for each person in the audience.

He saw the dark as a ragged garment
spread out to air.
Through its rents and moth-holes
the silver light came pouring.
