Hi Tracie
Why are you suspecting that he is on drugs? Is this a behavioural problem?
If his behaviour is such that suggests that he is 'not of sound judgement or
insight' or 'interfering with the health, safety education and welfare of
students' then let him provide the evidence that he is using drugs and needs
rehab support.
If you have health and safety concerns, what are these based on? - If, after
you have looked into them, they are genuine, I suggest that management
suspend him pending investigation into the behaviour that leads to the
concerns and don't let him loose near machinery or kids (I am not sure which
are more dangerous!)
If he is not meeting the college's performance criteria in a probationary
period. Tell him and get rid.
It is not the College's responsbility to provide someone with an excuse for
not performing! Drug testing when there are already performance issues
muddies the water.
If they are really squeamish and do not dismiss, ensure that he is
accompanied whilst in with students near machinery (technician or team
teaching) or put into theory classrooms until they have confidence in him
again.
Hope this helps
Amanda

Dear group
Please help!!
We have an employee who is suspect in the use of drugs ?? what. The employee
is in a technology dept and is alone with students operating machinery.
There are performance issues that management are dealing with and the
employee is on probation.
Where do I stand in drug screening??? Can I request that the employee do
this? Do I need to go through the union? We do not currently do on sute drug
screening as yet.
Thanks in advance!!
Tracie
