APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 1, 2005
As the Research Associate work study you will work within the innovative
Banff New Media Institute (BNMI) environment and be exposed to what is
happening within Canada and internationally in contemporary new media and
convergent media arts, research, administration, academics and
production. The BNMI is a cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural
environment with an international network of high level artists,
producers, directors, researchers, scientists, technologists, software
designers, theorists and institutions.
Working under the supervision of the BNMI Research Manager and the
Mentorship of the Director of Research, this work study opportunity offers
an advanced learning experience for a social science and humanities
researcher who is in a PhD program or has a completed Doctorate or Masters
level degree. As the BNMI Research Associate you will provide
administrative, archival, and technical assistance in the development and
delivery of the BNMI research, co-productions and research summits. This
includes:
• Tracking down detailed information on artists/writers/designers
currently engaged in a specific area of research related activity
• Assisting in the organization of research events at Banff and
abroad
• Writing coherent publishable reports of research activities and
events
• Researching in deep detail about areas of research development for
the BNMI
• Working in collaboration with others on the preparation of
research grants and funding applications.
• Undertaking actual junior research in the assessment of tool use
in the WestGrid and A.R.T. Lab projects
• Organization of research documentation and archives
Research Work study placements at this level are intended for senior
professionals and researchers looking for new challenges and
opportunities, including secondments and sabbatical leave. Participants
immerse themselves in BNMI projects that may include components of their
own research or professional practice. This placement requires full-time
commitment and independent thinking. All participants sign a learning
contract that assists in the evaluation of their work study experience.
Learning opportunities may be formal sessions and/or workshops, or may be
informal opportunities arising out of the situation of the moment. The
work portion of the experience will primarily focus on activities that
compliment the participant’s learning objectives, as the work relates to
the real and ongoing activities of the BNMI. Work components will be in
the areas of focus of the BNMI including work associated with new media
research, performance or event production activities, providing technical
support to artists, arts management and administration, arts marketing,
and promotions. It is recognised that work study participants bring prior
training and expertise to their term. In many cases the work experience
will provide participants the opportunity to adapt their current skills to
the arts or performance environment.
The BNMI is looking for someone with excellent written communication
skills, great organizational abilities, and a passion for new media and
social science and humanities research. Areas of work include research,
publication, administrative support, maintenance of archives and
participation in BNMI programs.
Work study programs are intended to provide the participant with a
combination of learning opportunities and supervised, practical work
related to the participant’s learning objectives. Learning opportunities
may be formal sessions and/or workshops, or may be informal opportunities
arising out of the situation of the moment. The work portion of the
experience will primarily focus on activities that compliment the
participant’s learning objectives, as the work relates to the real and
ongoing activities of The Banff Centre. Work components will be in the
areas of expertise of The Banff Centre including work associated with
performance or event production activities, providing technical support to
artists, arts management and administration, arts marketing, and
fundraising. It is recognised that work study participants bring prior
training and expertise to their term. In many cases the work experience
will provide participants the opportunity to adapt their current skills to
the arts or performance environment.
Participation in a work study term is considered to be full-time study,
rather than employment. All participants sign a learning contract that
assists in the evaluation of their work study experience.
Participants accepted into this program receive financial assistance to
cover the full cost of the program fee of $185.50 per week based on
residency dates. Scholarship stipend payments are not specifically linked
to work performed or performance but are intended to enable participants
to pursue the overall learning objectives. Participants who do not fulfill
their responsibilities in pursuing learning objectives including
appropriate participation in work activities may be expelled from the
program and remainder of scholarship stipend award revoked.
The Banff Centre may be able to offer shared accommodation on-campus at
very reasonable rates, subject to availability. Expenses such as on-campus
accommodation will be deducted from stipend payments. No deductions for
income tax, CPP, or EI are made from stipend payments. Financial
assistance and stipend awards are considered taxable income for Revenue
Canada purposes.
The Banff Centre’s Arts programming is a place for artists. It is
dedicated to lifelong learning and professional career development in the
arts, acting as site and catalyst for creative activity and experience.
