At the risk of teaching my grandmother to suck eggs, may I suggest that the
terms translator/translation, interpreter, link worker and advocate need
glossing. Many people don't know the difference and this can give rise to
inappropriate deployment of linguists as well as to other staff having
completely unrealistic expectations of what each can or should be asked to
do. It might even be worthwhile signposting management staff to the
national languages framework and national occupational standards for
guidance on what the various levels mean. see

I have a glossary if that would be helpful and am happy to send it. I also
have (though I am finding the dust-dated archive less than useful as a
filing system) a chart showing the abilities that you can expect of people
in deploying their languages, at the various levels. I will try and dig it
out if there is interest.
kind regards and good luck with this development

Dear All,
The Department of Health is currently in the process of rewriting its
guidance material for collecting ethnic category data (link to the old
version below) and we are looking for some examples of good practice when
it comes to ethnic monitoring forms. Could some of you e-mail me the ones
you use please?
