The Masters in Midwifery at Thames Valley University, London, has
recently been revalidated. It is a distance learning programme,
available worldwide, but now with some optional taught modules available
at the university site.

Programme summary
The aim of this Masters programme is to enable midwives, nationally and
internationally, to critically explore issues in contemporary practice
as a basis for improving care for child-bearing women, and to develop
the skills necessary to impact on individual practice. The programme is
designed to bring you to the leading edge of practice and, through
extending knowledge of socio-political issues affecting women and their
health, you will develop the knowledge and skills to facilitate the
direction of midwifery services in your own country.
Programme outline
The Masters programme consists of a number of core and optional modules.
Essential to completion is the acquisition of six modules in total,
representing 180 Level 7 credits, which must include Exploring Evidence
in Midwifery and Research Methods and Dissertation.
The core modules are:
ß Exploring Evidence in Midwifery (60 credits)
ß Research Methods and Dissertation (60 credits).
The optional modules are:
ß Women, Mental Health and Childbearing (20 credits)
ß Influences on Women’s Experiences of Childbearing (30 credits)
ß Midwifery in Context: Tradition and Profession (30 credits)
ß Leadership in the Current Health and Social Care Environment (30
credits)
ß Enhancing Public Health (40 credits).
Location
Studying at a distance with the University offers you the opportunity to
study in a location which best suits your circumstances. You may choose
to study at home or in your workplace and at times that suit your
working and social commitments.
Alternatively, you may choose to attend the optional, taught modules
offered at the University.
You will normally be expected to undertake the programme over three
years. However, we recognise that studying at a distance with the
University can create additional demands on your time and you have up to
seven years to complete the programme. Start date: October.
