HI,
A great place to start might be the introduction to
Jim Moore, The post-Darwinian controversies
The opening chapter sets up the context for the 'conflict thesis', via
Draper and White, as a response to publication of the Darwin's Origin (1859)
You could also look at John Brooke, Science and Religion some historical
perspectives - the opening chapters talk about the various models of
science and religion interraction.
Another good book is Lindberg and Numbers, God and Nature
again, the introduction addresses some of these questions re: the conflict
thesis in general context
Cheers
Ben
