Fundamentalism: The Challenge of the 21st Century
Saturday20th May 2006
Organised by Department of Applied Social Sciences, University of Brighton
and Department of English University of Birmingham
To be held at The University of Brighton in combination with the Brighton
Festival 2006
This conference is part of Brighton Festival 2006 and is about
fundamentalism and difference in relation to questions of ethics,
identity, sexuality, race, religion and politics. The conference deals
with how fundamentalism and difference affects us privately and public.
What is fundamentalism and where is it located? We are accustomed to
attributing the term fundamentalism to different religions such as
Christianity and Islam, but exactly how does fundamentalism and difference
operate in relation to personal and public identities. How do these issues
operate not just in relation to ideology and culture, but also on a
psychological and unconscious level?
Keynote Speakers include Adam Phillips, Professor Andrew Samuels,
Professor Lynne Segal
The call for papers is for people to present short papers and run a
workshop panel/discussion. No more than 3 people for each suggested
panel. Those interested please contact Dr. Jan Campbell
