I would be quite interested in something that looked at RFID. But to be useful it would need to address pratical issues such as:

Attaching tags to objects

Longevity of tags

Cost of infrastructure

Availability of software to tie output from readers into security systems & collections management systems

Rather than just this is how it works.

	Dear Frances (et al),

Sue approached MDA for some information on this last week.

My suggestion was that a session focussed solely on barcodes would be of

relatively limited use, whereas one which considered barcodes and RFID

alongside each other as possible alternatives would be more useful. That,

plus the fact (hence Sue's email) that it is hard to find many museums that

have implemented barcoding in the wild.

I would be very happy to put MDA up to facilitate a Technical Briefing on

this issue, but it would be useful to know whether this is something which

	others would find useful?

Having considered the possibilities of bar coding in the past without

ever getting as far as introducing them to the V&A, we are now exploring

the use of RFID technology (radio frequency identification tags), both

active and passive, for managing our collections, enhancing security and

ultimately providing visitors with collections-related information (e.g.

through handheld devices in galleries). There was a session on this

technology at the mda conference last year, but I for one would be

interested in having an update at the MA conference in October. If

others in the museums community agree, perhaps the MA could look into

this as a topic for one of its Technical Briefings?
