Can I point out an error in the first line of the message below? It's
JOHNS Hopkins (not John). Sorry to be pedantic, but I've seen this
particular mistake three times in as many days.

Quotable quotes from William Brody, President, John Hopkins
University,
Baltimore, Mass. JHU Gazette, December 2004
"our library has the most effective search engines yet invented -
librarians
who are highly skilled at ferreting out the uniquely useful references
that
you need."
"Massive information overload is placing librarians in an ever more
important role as human search engines. They are trained and gifted at
ferreting out and vetting the key resource material when you need it.
Today's technology is spectacular,- but it can't always trump a
skilled
human".

Having left academic libraries decades ago, and no personal expertise
to
offer, I am sure that all members of the List hope that other academic
libraries, and the wider academic community, will come to your support
in
marshalling the evidence. Time to use the same research skills and
evidence-based practice to save students of the future from the loss
of
expertise to demonstrate the range and level of skills and information
literacy that are truly needed to support a research-led university.
I imagine you will also be looking to CILIP for support both in making
your
case, and in directing you towards sources of expertise that can help
you
put the argument together duirng the consultation. Also, to library
schools.
Both have a vested interest in presenting the evidence base for having
librarians at all. As a member I would expect CILIP to see this as a
priority, and fully in line with its mission statement:
http://www.cilip.org.uk/aboutcilip/charterMissionGoals.
You might consider - once you have your evidence - whether lots of
news
coverage, with the support of educated journalists, might be
particularly
useful on this one...
Finally, I'm sure members of [log in to unmask]
will
have a view, and might be able to help?
