PRM has a curator/researcher and a clerical opposite number to me; COMPAS I
think doesn't have a library as such. My understanding is that the
University pays a number of departmental librarians on clerical grades,
though its website does not give this impression.

What happens in the Balfour Library/Pitt Rivers/COMPAS? Is everybody
clerical at ISCA?

I'll give it a go, but that was the result of applying nationally. They
didn't respond to my follow-up.

Mike
just had a look at the AUT site: http://www.aut.org.uk
<http://www.aut.org.uk> ...it says:

The AUT represents a wide range of staff at all stages of their careers in
the UK's higher education and research establishments. All academic and
related staff, whether in pre- or post-1992 institutions, are eligible to
join. Those members of staff catered for include:

academics
researchers (including Medical Research Council staff)
administrators
computer staff
librarians
and postgraduates employed to do teaching or related work.

Eligibility is not dependent on type of contract, and we represent
permanent, full-time, fixed-term, part-time, and hourly-paid staff. The AUT
can be of particular help to members on fixed-term contracts.

....why not query this with central AUT rather than the local branch, try
this email: [log in to unmask]

In my case they turned me down because I am paid as clerical, regardless of
the job I do. It seems in Oxford they *can* ignore us.

I am quite surprised Mike (sorry I think I missed your earlier email in the
deluge of emails I get), perhaps things will be different after they merge
with NATFE, or maybe you could even write to them when they draw up a new
constitution (which presumably they will have to) - outlining your previous
application refusal and reasons why librarians should be part of the new
union? If you have a training role maybe you could emphasise this more, or
if you have an external training role (say with a CILIP group) try to get
this across. I think a lot of people in libraries would like to join AUT,
and it's not something they will be able to ignore. paul

The fact remains that people in my position are *refused* representation by
AUT. I would far rather be in AUT than Unison, though I have had good help
from them, but am not allowed to join.

I don't think you need any special grading status to join AUT...
