"Breastfeeding Medicine" New Journal to be Launched by Mary Ann Liebert,
Inc., Publishers
New Rochelle, NY, July 21, 2005- With the upcoming celebration of World
Breastfeeding Week, August 1-7, 2005, along with the growing research and
interest in the field of breastfeeding medicine, Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. is
pleased to announce the launch of Breastfeeding Medicine, a new,
interdisciplinary peer-reviewed medical journal that will be coming out in
early 2006.
Published both in print and online by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.
(www.liebertpub.com <http://www.liebertpub.com/>), Breastfeeding Medicine
will be the official publication of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine
(ABM). The Journal will enable physicians to better understand all the
complexities of breastfeeding as well as the immediate and long-term
benefits. This academic peer-reviewed journal will help physicians educate
medical staff and patients to ensure optimal care of mother and child.
"A new era of interest in breastfeeding, coupled with widespread
evidence-based research in lactation medicine was the impetus for
Breastfeeding Medicine," said Mary Ann Liebert, President and CEO of Mary
Ann Liebert, Inc. "With ever increasing demands for the best science to
justify the best outcomes in a cost effective way, research in this field
continues to document that breastfeeding has a major impact on healthcare
outcomes and costs since the baby has fewer medical problems (such as ear
infections, allergies and obesity), as does the mother (such as lower
incidence of breast and ovarian cancer)," she added.
Breastfeeding Medicine will publish original scientific papers, reviews, and
clinical case studies covering the wide spectrum of topics touched by
breastfeeding and lactation. These include: the epidemiology and
physiological basis for the benefits of breastfeeding to both mother and
infant; the pathophysiologic basis for the health consequences of artificial
feeding; the impact of breastfeeding and lactation on the physical and
psychological health of both mother and infant; breastfeeding management in
health and disease; the pathophysiology and management of common and
uncommon breastfeeding problems; indications and contraindications to
breastfeeding; factors effecting the use of medications by the breastfeeding
mother; as well as the broad range of related social, cultural, and economic
issues.
Ruth A. Lawrence, M.D., Editor-in-Chief, a renowned breastfeeding expert and
past President of ABM, pioneered a movement to educate medical students on
the benefits of breastfeeding at the University of Rochester, NY, where she
is Professor of Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology. Cynthia Howard, M.D.,
MPH, Associate Professor of Medicine, URMC Department of Pediatrics, and
current Secretary of ABM, is the Deputy Editor.
Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. is a privately held, fully integrated media company
