NHS Athens and Blackwell
To follow on from Andy Rchardson
Well, you would have thought that!.

Blackwell have only be using prefix to authenticate not the org ID code so if a NHS library had bought part or all of the Blackwell collection it opens up to everyone as its just the prefix nhs...
We hit this problem in July of 2003 and as far as we know Blackwell haven't sorted it. Last we heard it had been referred to the States.
Blackwell blame Athens and say they told them it was Ok to just prefix as security and Athens say they told all suppliers and publishers a long ago they would have to use prefix and org ID code. Because they aren't using org ID code I think it would be an awful lot of work for them to re-code all their resources.

We use an organisational username and password that Blackwells gave us..so we have always used that first box and our customers are told don't use the Athens key and its not your Athens password.
Its not as secure the way we have it, and there should be some pressure on Blackwell to resolve it.

kind regards

As far as I can see - Blackwells Synergy is an Athens Compliant service - so you should be able to affix your Blackwells Synergy subscriptions to your nhs Athens organisation prefix. Not sure if you may get charged by Athens for this - probably £100 - but don't quote me on it...

Subject: Blackwell Synergy problems?

Morning all

Does anyone else have as much trouble as I have trying to access journals
via this? We have a subscription to the particular journal I'm trying to
access, but I seem to go round in circles, being repeatedly told I need to
buy the article/have an online subs. After numerous emails between me and
their helpdesk, I am waiting for our IT dept. to come & see if they can sort
it - seems to be an IP address/NHS firewall problem - , but we are not
exactly top of their list of priorities - just wondered if anyone else had
a) had the problem, and b) found a simple answer, while I 'm awaiting IT's
attention.
