Alice's Adventures Under Ground
Interactive CD-Rom
Alice's Adventures Under Ground by Lewis Carroll is perhaps the most famous of all the British Library's 19th-century literary manuscripts. It is Lewis Carroll's first version of the work later published as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in 1865, and now more popularly known simply as Alice in Wonderland.
The amazing illustrated original manuscript has now been digitised and this exciting new British Library CD-ROM allows you to:
Turn the pages of the complete manuscript - backwards, forwards and zoom in on any page
§ Hear Miriam Margolyes read the story aloud while the pages turn automatically in synchronisation with the words
§ See a short film about Lewis Carroll's 'Original Alice' - and the creation and history of the book he wrote for her

The Essential Shakespeare
The British Library and the Royal Shakespeare Company join forces to publish this remarkable treasury of live Shakespeare recordings. Selected from an extensive collection of recordings made by the British Library Sound Archive, this set offers scenes and speeches from some of the most celebrated Shakespeare productions in the history of the Royal Shakespeare Company. All the recordings are being published for the first time.
The twenty extracts have been personally selected by RSC Associate Director Gregory Doran. They cover a period of over four decades of exceptional Shakespeare performances, from Laurence Olivier as Coriolanus in 1959 to Judi Dench in All's Well that Ends Well in 2002. Here are some of the RSC's most celebrated productions - the now legendary Wars of the Roses from 1963, Peter Brook's King Lear with Paul Scofield and John Barton's Richard II with Richard Pasco and Ian Richardson. Other notable actors represented include Peggy Ashcroft, Alan Howard, Derek Jacobi, Ian McKellen, Alan Rickman, Anthony Sher, Donald Sinden, Robert Stephens, Patrick Stewart, Janet Suzman and David Warner.
Two CDs with booklet including the texts of the extracts from the plays. Running time approx. 137 minutes

'Voices of History 2'
Following the success of last year's 'Voices of History', here is a second volume of historic recordings of celebrated people who were active from the early days of sound recording to the middle of the twentieth century.
This second volume covers four major areas of interest - the arts, the sciences, sport and exploration. Among the thirty-eight recordings selected are some of the earliest spoken recordings ever made, such as those by the explorer Henry Morton Stanley, the composer Arthur Sullivan and the American showman P.T. Barnum.
Other rare or notable items include a unique recording of the voice of Victorian physicist Lord Kelvin, which is being published for the first time; the authors Leo Tolstoy (speaking in English) and Arthur Conan Doyle; Malcolm Campbell on setting a new land speed record and Charles Lindbergh on flying across the Atlantic; and a series of eminent scientists talking about their work, including Thomas Alva Edison, Sigmund Freud, Ernest Rutherford, Albert Einstein, Alexander Fleming and Francis Crick.
Two CDs with booklet explaining the background and history of each item, together with translations where necessary. Running time approx.
