Thanks for the response and great to know an overview of LILAC will be
available on the list. I was reminded, by one list member, that there are
descriptions of some papers on Shiela Webber's blog at
http://ciquest.shef.ac.uk/infolit/ .
Shiela refer's to Marian Smith's and my poster, but alas the photo did not
come out due to the combination of flash and lamination. The poster
provides an overview of the factors that would motivate 11-12 year olds to
learn information literacy via project work based on
interviews/questionnaire and focus groups with young people in schools. If
anyone wants a copy of the poster I am happy to provide an electronic copy -
since the list doesn't allow attachments.
Currently I am involved in piloting an information literacy course, lasting
seven days, in Dar Es Salaam - lucky I know. I would be keen to talk to
anyone else who is involved in IL in developing countries. The interest
here, in Tanzania, is huge. IL really could be a fundamental factor for
change. Although access to the Internet (which is even more important here
due to the lack of cash for books, journals etc.) outside the cities is a
problem. I will post a summary of our approach, what worked and what didn't
once we have reviewed.
However, perhaps unsurprisingly, the use of mind maps for problem definition
and identification of key concepts; group work; presentations and structured
group reflection (what was good, what were the problems, how these were
resolved)at the end of each session all proved useful for consolidating,
reinforcing and sharing learning.
Best wishes,
Mark
