Subject: Music interlending -summary of replies
Dear All,
Thank you to everyone who responded to my plea for sources of
information for music interlending. This is a summary of the details
everyone has sent me.
The National Library of Scotland have a particularly useful set of pages
on music interlending and I would recommend that anyone searching for
music ILL material should have a browse.
http://www.nls.uk/professional/interlibraryservices/services/music_inter
lending.html
The pages contain useful information on:
* details you need from your reader.
* provides a useful glossary of music terms for the uninitiated.
* gives details about hire only material
* has useful links to online databases for music material (see below)
* has a useful list of printed resources you might use to trace material
* links to Scottish and English libraries involved with music
interlending
Online databases:
http://www.nls.uk/professional/interlibraryservices/services/ill_music_r
esources.html#online
Other than the usual suspects, COPAC, WorldCat, Unity and Encore (an
orchestral set and vocal score catalogue) are the following which I had
not come across.
Cecilia database - database of music collections. After a quick look it
appears to be mainly special collections, but does allow you to see who
specializes in what. Mainly for reference info rather than ILL.
www.cecilia-uk.org
Gerontius.net - database of vocal scores/ orchestral sets for hire.
Seems to specialize in lending between music societies (not necessarily
ILL). Like Encore it is useful in that it provides an idea of how many
copies each library has - essential when you are trying to borrow a
specific number of vocal scores.

The National Library of Scotland has a page of links to libraries who
are involved with lending music which is especially helpful:-
http://www.nls.uk/professional/interlibraryservices/services/music_lendi
ng_libraries.html
The page contains links to the catalogues and a brief note saying
whether the library supplies via ILL, commercially or whether they are
reference only. I suspect that I will be making use of this page in
future!
Libraries North West also has a set of pages on music interlending.
http://www.lnw.org.uk/bu/music/musicintro.asp
Their page on searching library OPACS for Music and Drama material has
links to a number of North West public and Academic library catalogues
and a list of other places to try. Each library entry lists the search
options available. This is also useful for librarians looking for drama
material.
Thank you to Jonathan Saksena of the Lancashire County Library for the
following list of on-line catalogues:
Barbican Music Library - sheet music

And for those requests which you really, really can't trace Jenny Brine
suggested joining the iaml-uk-irl mailing list which is a jiscmail list
(like lis-ill) used by music librarians to appeal for locations for
hard-to-find material.
By the time you've checked all these then you can safely say that you've
done your best!
