I suppose that solving problems rather than celebrating success is "what we
do" in general. The management of SARS, and probably BSE look like major
successes of a very advanced system in which I had little faith, the
situation with HIV is harder to judge.
We continue, both individually and collectively, to fact new
tests. Courage and hope are indispensable but need not make us blind. Our
obligation to those who've gone before is to face rather than ignore each
new challenge.
