2 PhD Studentships in GIS with the Ordnance Survey
We are seeking committed, dynamic and self-motivated candidates with good
research skills for two studentships with the Ordnance Survey.
CLOSING DATE FRIDAY 15TH JULY 2005
We are expecting the successful candidates to hold a relevant BSc or MSc
degree at good level (2:1 or better) in Computing Science, or Geographical
Information Science or a quantitative discipline and to have strong java
computing and/or data processing skills.
The projects – EngD and CASE PhD
The EngD project is based on a four-year postgraduate award intended for the
UK's leading research engineers who aspire to key managerial positions in
industry.
The research project will focus on the development of a software platform
for data collection, which can be used for professional applications as well
as end-user applications (such as mobile gaming). The application will be
based on mobile devices and will utilise OSnet – the national network that
will enable Real Time Kinematic (RTK) GPS positioning. The project will pay
special attention to usability engineering/HCI issues, exploring interaction
with a relatively complex technical environment (OSnet, GPS and Galileo
network).
Applicants for this position will need strong programming skills, interest
in Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and Human-Computer Interaction.
The stipend for the research engineer on this project will be £19,000, with
an increment of £400 each year, of which £14,000 are tax free.
The CASE PhD project is based on a three years programme, and will
investigate how context-dependant proximity operators together with other
techniques can be used to extract implicit thematic information from spatial
configurations. This approach will be applied to detailed cartographic data
from the Ordnance Survey (OS).
The aim of the research is therefore to conceive and build a model of
functional information that can be used to process a topographic database,
in order to derive a richer thematic content. This content will then be
incorporated into geographic or cartographic products in order to better
meet the needs of specific categories of map product customers. This work
will also be the opportunity to find out what additional data could enrich
the database (either directly or through a configurational analysis) at
reasonable cost.
Applicants for this position will need strong programming skills and
interest in cartographic databases and generalisation techniques.
The stipend for the PhD student on this project will be about £15,000, with
an increment of £400 each year, tax free.
For a full award students must have relevant connection with UK (usually
established by residence).
The closing date for applications is 15th July 2005. Applications may be
made electronically or by post.
