Ordnance Survey GPS consultation workshop invitation
RICS and Ordnance Survey would like to invite you to take part in a
consultation workshop on Tuesday 15 March at RICS headquarters in London.
Ordnance Survey is continually developing its use and management of GPS
technology and the next, highly significant development is the amalgamation
of Ordnance Survey's local Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) GPS base stations into
a single network capable of generating national RTK corrections for GPS
users anywhere in the country. This means that GPS positional accuracy can
be improved to around 20 mm.
Ordnance Survey intends to make this network available to a wide range of
users across the country and this consultation workshop is your opportunity
to learn more about Ordnance Survey's strategy, see an early demonstration
of the service and give your feedback.
The GPS consultation workshop will provide an open forum for discussion,
enabling Ordnance Survey to fully consider your views on a national GPS
correction framework. We are particularly interested in feedback on
potential uses and how maximum uptake can be achieved to ensure that, when
launched, the service fully meets your needs.
This free workshop will run from 10.00 am to 4 pm, with lunch at 12.00 noon.
To reserve your place, or for further details, contact Rebecca Harty at

RICS Geomatics Evening Lecture Series 2004-05 Spring
Thursday 3rd March 2005 - joint lecture with RSPsoc - Tsunami special
Title: Mapping, disaster response and the Tsunami - on the ground
experiences
Speaker: David Spackman, MapAction
Location: RICS Great George Street
Time: 17.15 for 18.00, lecture finish 1900hrs
Immediately following the Tsunami Disaster and at the request of the United
Nations Disaster Assessment Centre (UNDAC), an eleven-person team of highly
trained, highly skilled volunteers from MapAction deployed to Colombo, Sri
Lanka. Arriving in the early hours of December 29th, they were one of the
first foreign NGOs to arrive. Within hours, MapAction had set up as part of
the newly formed Sri Lankan Government's Centre for National Operations
(CNO) and was producing its first maps for the Sri Lankan Government and for
the International Aid Agencies, showing real-time information of the
affected areas and its population. This is essential to assist logistics
within the country and to help all provide aid more effectively and
efficiently. MapAction employ satellite imagery, GPS and other high tech
methods to achieve the accuracy and timeliness sought by international aid
agencies.
David will speak on the difficulties of working in a hostile post disaster
environment, where humanitarian considerations are all.

accuracy Differential GPS positioning services.
Andrew McNeill is Chief Surveyor for the Marine Survey Division of Fugro NV.
He has worldwide responsibilities in Fugro for coordination of training,
survey practice and survey software development.
Andrew is a Topographic Science graduate from Glasgow University. After
graduation in 1983 he joined Brown & Root Survey in Aberdeen, transferring
to Subsea Offshore in 1993 after their acquisition of Brown & Root's Survey
Division. During his time at B&R / Subsea, he held various positions in
offshore survey and later software development & management, and finally
taking up the role of Chief Surveyor.
He joined Fugro-UDI in 1998 as Chief Surveyor and Manager of the Geomatics
