Hi Eric,
A recent paper by Tom Evans demonstrates the approach we (i.e. the Tim and
his research group) have been taking. Tom's paper shows the effects of
fractionating garnet on the effective bulk composition. The stuff that Tim
has been talking about is focussed on the core of the garnets, with
pseudosections being calculated for the bulk composition of the sample in
question; typically in the NCMnKFMASH system. We haven't addressed the Fe3+
issue. It would be great if you would come to STOMP and join in the
discussion with you insight.
Tom's paper-
T.P. Evans, 2004. A method for calculating effective bulk composition
modification
due to crystal fractionation in garnet-bearing schist: implications for
isopleth thermobarometry. J. metamorphic Geol., 2004, 22, 547-557.
Also, to correct a point in one of Tim's earlier e-mails - most of us drink
a dry white wine with red claw - something like a Clare Valley Riesling or a
Hunter Valley Semillon. A better match for the crustaceans delicate
flavours. There is plenty of opportunity to down a few reds later.
Cheers,
Cameron
