Dear colleagues
Here at Plymouth City Museum we hold a very interesting mineral collection
amassed by a Cornish collector Sir John St. Aubyn 1758 - 1839. The
collection dates from late 1790s to early 1800s.
There is much work afoot on this and a herbaria we hold that was also
amassed by St. Aubyn.
Loose mineral labels that detail a description and location as well as some
references have recently been "rediscovered". These labels are descriptive
and are believed to be the labels that would originally sat with the
specimens. Unfortunately we have no definitive way of repatriating these
labels with the minerals but we still need to follow up on these leads.
What I want to ask is does any of the following sound familiar at all?
" Lead ore from the Levant, place unknown, sent from Constantinople by Baron
Reineggs an able German Mineralogist - "
Any one know who Baron Reineggs was?
" Sr. John St. Aubyn from the Calonnian Museum 29th June 1797 Foliated Spar
0.10.6"
Does anyone know of this museum?
R. De Lish/ Liste/ Lisbe Espcec, sometimes just RDL. Several labels listing
Vols. Plates. Fig. and Var.
Does anyone know what this is and if there is anyway of finding out what the
references on our labels may mean?
We are in the process of scanning the labels but I don't have any images
available yet. Mostly they are in St. Aubyn's handwriting but there are a
few lables in German in a different handwriting.
If this sparks any interest or ideas please contact myself or Helen
Fothergill.
Other names associated with this collection are William Babington,
Count/Comte de Bournon, Earl of Bute and Richard Greene of Lichfield.
Yours faithfully,
Kelly Dilks
