International Alert has recently produced a report of the findings of
research carried out by two South Kivu Women's organisations:
'Women's Bodies as a Battleground: Sexual Violence Against Women and
Girls During the War in the DRC. South Kivu (1996-2003)'.
Due to the increasing 'privatisation' of violence in the DRC, combatants
who have no regard for international protocol often use sexual violence
as a weapon of war. This research, conducted and reported by local
women's organisations, goes beyond documenting the violation of women's
human rights during the war in DRC to examining the socio-cultural roots
of this violence and the different forms it takes.
