Chair of the Advisory Panel on Country Information (APCI)
Following the decision of the current Chair of the Advisory Panel on Country
Information (APCI), Professor Stephen Castles, not to seek re-appointment,
the Home Office is currently seeking candidates for his successor.
The APCI is an advisory non-departmental public body established under
provisions in the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002. Its function
is to consider and make recommendations to the Secretary of State about the
content of country of origin information material produced by the Home
Office for use by officials working in the asylum determination process. The
Panel usually meets twice a year, in London
The main role of the chair is to provide strategic direction to the work of
the panel and to represent the panel to Ministers and others with an
interest in its work.
In order to fulfil this role effectively, candidates for the post must have
a strong academic background in social sciences and experience of migration
/ refugee issues. They will also be expected to demonstrate evidence of the
following competences:
* Well developed leadership skills
* Chairing meetings
* Communicating effectively with a range of people at a senior
level and dealing with the media
* Working with Government
* Understanding the role of country of origin information in the
asylum process and the political context in which the work of the APCI may
be viewed
* Good knowledge of the kind of material used as source information
for the Home Office's country of origin information products
