SDRN/RICS Lecture “Citizenship and the Environment: Towards Sustainable
Development”, 15 February 2004

The first in a series of Sustainable Development and Quality of Life
evening lectures organised by the Sustainable Development Research
Network (SDRN) with the support of the Royal Institution of Chartered
Surveyors (RICS) will be held in London on the 15 February 2005. The
lecture will be given by Professor Andrew Dobson on the subject of
Citizenship and the Environment.

“Citizenship and the Environment: Towards Sustainable Development”,
Professor Andrew Dobson, Open University

  5.30pm for 6.00pm, 15 February 2004

RICS, 12 Great George Street, Parliament Square, London, SW1P 3AD

Refreshments will be available on arrival

A drinks reception will follow the lecture

Abstract:

“When policy-makers think about how to get people to live more
sustainable lives, they generally reach for the 'economic incentives'
section of the policy toolbox. There is no doubt that such incentives
can work, and work quickly.  Some of the evidence for this will be
reviewed. Professor Dobson will then draw a distinction between
behaviour and attitudes, and suggest that economic incentives are
better at changing the former than shifting the latter.  He will argue
that long-term commitment to sustainable development requires attitude-
as well as behaviour-change. How might this be brought about?  He will
suggest that 'environmental citizenship' can fill the gap: describing
what it is, and discussing ways it might be encouraged, particularly in
the context of secondary school Citizenship teaching.”

The Sustainable Development and Quality of Life lectures are intended
to provide a wider audience for innovative and challenging thinking
from current research relevant to sustainable development. Attendance
is free, but places must be strictly reserved in advance (see below).
