You can't actually believe in this day and age that proof of identity
has never been requested for such an important document.

"Ah", they'll say. "That's ok, because we're going to fingerprint you,
take DNA samples and put you on a ginormous database and call it a
prevention of terrorism measure. And we'll ride roughshod over your
civil liberties because, as the Daily Mail will say 'Those with nothing
to hide have nothing to fear!'."
National ID Card here we come

Subject: [data-protection] Issue of birth certifications
I have recently had cause to obtain a full version of my daughter's
birth certificate in order to allow us to apply for a passport for her.
Given that, for a child under 16, the only identification required in
order to obtain a passport (for children born before a particular date)
is a copy of their full birth certificate I have been extremely
concerned to discover that no id is required when requesting a copy of
said birth certifate to prove who it is who is asking for the copy.
Yes, we have had to provide the precise date of birth dd/mm/yy and know
in which area of the UK she was registered but this is now, in
Warwickshire for certain, becoming available for anyone to find out via
a search on the web where volunteers are busy loading all the
information so that one can swiftly search cross-county.
I accept that such information has always been available but the
increase in availability electronically of lists of who exists and the
increase in identity theft and other issues gives me great cause for
concern. Am I over- reacting here?
