Apologies for my brevity being a cause of so much ill feeling on the
listserv.
Academic publishers rightly charge fees for their copy, after all, we
don't see journals given out free at newsstands. Furthermore, personally
I'm a keen believer in the law of copyright where wide distribution is
concerned. If an abstract raises interest, then it's not beyond the wit
of man to obtain a copy.
I sing bass in a church choir and every music sheet has words to the
effect that 'photocopying is forbidden.' Where would we be if every
choir only purchased one copy of a piece of music?
