And to clarify even more. Yes to use Building Blocks you need LS
Enterprise and Bb's ePortfolio tool is part of the CMS which is extra,
and as Kate says, it probably is useful to have the Bb Community System
(Portal) as this is crucial to controlling roles within the CMS (and
LS). What I said about Building Blocks was for enhancing the existing Bb
ePortfolio system.
Use of a separate ePortfolio system may have its own advantages, but
integrating it could be hard work. I note the ePortaro company work with
Bb so maybe they have an integration. Just that an ePortfolio system
also requires a Content Management System and all the integration,
administration and support issues that come with that. I think Bb know
what they are doing packaging the lot together as it all lives on the
one server system, and the administration is familiar. That said we use
a different system (than Bb) for online assessment, so I know the
arguments for alternative solutions when the user need justfies it.

Richard et al,
Can you clarify something for me? Is the Blackboard ePortfolio
system a building block that can be used with any level of Bb
implementation or is it only available as part of the one of the higher
level implementations?

For general student PDPs at Dundee, we are going with the direct route
of using the Bb ePortfolio system. Main issues with this approach become
the tuition required for students and staff in the use of the CMS and
ePortfolio tools, and to what extent PDPs are embedded within the course
material for students (or not). Some pilot activity reports are
favourable.

I would love to know more about this as well. Heard about the
e-portfolio (PDP?) add-on at the Durham conference and an email list,
but I lost the info that I scribbled down.
