My research group was recently awarded an EPSRC PPA (Partnerships for Public
Awareness) award which will enable us to provide display material as a
contribution to a number of Biomimicry exhibits to be displayed at the Eden
Project's new Education Resource Centre which is due to be opened in Sept
2005.
(i) Using in-house computer software developed at the University of Exeter,
rapid prototyped models will be generated in a range of sizes, colours and
materials in accordance to the appropriateness of the messages delivered by
the Eden Project. These models will not only convey a Biomimicry message but
will also demonstrate how modern techniques can be used to visualise tiny
objects in very high detail.
(ii) We will also harness advanced computer modelling techniques to
demonstrate the potential use of such procedures in the advancement of
science. Interactive animations will concentrate on specific Biomimicry
aspects and will allow school children to join the debate about a number of
concerning issues.
My background is in the mechanisms of head injuries and not Biomimicry but
now as a Research Associate working with the Eden Project and as the PR
Officer for Simpleware Ltd. what I can offer is the computational tools and
techniques to be able to generate high quality physical and computer models
based on 3D imaging data.
I hope to learn more about Biomimicry in general and its applications,
particularly current issues that may be of political concern. In return I
hope I can be a potential resource for, well anything I might know about!
Regards
Emma Johnson
