Hi Lynzie,
Like many other institutions, Heriot-Watt University regulations state
that students may not enter or leave the examination hall within the
first 30 minutes of the exam session unless with the express permission
of the invigilator. Students are prohibited from leaving the examination
hall within the final 15 minutes of the session. In addition, students
are also not allowed to enter the examination hall more than 15 minutes
before the exam session is due to start, unless they have special needs.
Kind regards
Chris

Subject: Late entry to an exam hall
Dear colleagues
I have been asked to ascertain how strictly or otherwise, other
Universities deal with students arriving at exam halls after the
examination has started.
At the University of Bristol, we currently allow students to enter the
hall up to thirty minutes after the start of the examination, and
consequently, do not permit any student to leave within the first thirty
minutes.
Therefore, any students arriving very late would normally be referred to
their department. Some departments will then allow the student to
complete the examination, particularly if they are a finalist and can
provide a satisfactory explanation for their late arrival. The Exam
Board then has the authority to determine whether the mark obtained
should stand.
However, a number of departments have suggested extending the time limit
for entry to the exam hall up to sixty minutes from the start of the
exam and subsequently, prevent students leaving within the first sixty
minutes.
I would be grateful for your comments and, in particular, how 'late
arrivals' are treated at your Institution.
Best wishes,
Lynzie
