Dear all
Many thanks to all those who responded to my survey on fees for external examiners. The results were a useful guide, although my main conclusion is that comparisons are best made with like subjects and/or like HEIs, rather than by reference to nationwide figures.
Conclusions from 64 HEIs (including results of a recent Academic Registrars Group Survey in December 2004) are as follows:
1. Average UG fee = £425.26 pa; Range £225 - £685
Average PG fee = £358.33 pa; Range £200 - £650
Exact figures are extremely difficult to calculate due to the different nature of the responsibilities for examiners in different types of subjects.
Figures have only been taken from those with a basic annual rate or specified max/min related to a formula. (Comparisons are impossible where calculations are based on fees per student). Visit payments have been included in my total figure (default assumption of one visit).
Additional extra payments include travel & subsistence, dissertations, placement observation, franchised courses, workload - all of which makes comparison between subject areas very difficult.
2. 92% HEIs have centrally determined or centrally guided rates
3. 55% HEIs have different scales for UG and PG awards
4. 56% HEIs include student or assignment numbers in the calculations
5. 11% pay by module
Two HEIs mentioned that budgets are devolved, but there might be more, who didn't mention it.
If this was a professional survey, I would have to ask more deatailed questions by following up my respondents by phone or email, but hopefully this gives some picture of what people do.
