Dear ARLIS-LINK members
I've already forewarned some members of this list, but I am about to
unleash a questionnaire survey and I need some help/willing
participants!
I am looking into the drivers and barriers to building digital image
collections for teaching the history of art, architecture or design
within UK Higher Education institutions. This probably sounds similar
to The Digital Picture research (http://thedigitalpicture.ac.uk/),
but my focus is narrower and my methodology more quantitative.
Rather than scatter my survey across a number of lists, I'm trying to
identify collections and collection managers in advance - so I can
make sure the survey goes to the right people and can achieve as
complete a coverage as possible.
Please drop me a short email if you work within an HE institution and
manage/support a collection of 250+ images (digital OR non-digital)
that is used in the teaching of the history of art, architecture or
design (either as a main subject or as a component of another degree,
e.g. Fine Art, Architectural Studies).
I must stress that I am just as interested in hearing from those with
purely non-digital collections (e.g. slide collections).
I also want to stress that my research is not limited to
library-based image collections - I would be very grateful if you
could forward this message to _any_ colleagues in your department or
institution who have relevant collections. While I'm not interested
in strictly personal collections, any shared collection of 250+
non-digital/digital images used in teaching the history of
art/architecture/design in HE will fall within my definition.
All responses will be treated in strict confidence.
This survey is separate from my work with TASI
(http://www.tasi.ac.uk/), although it has TASI's support. Its primary
purpose is to gather data for a dissertation I'm writing to upgrade a
New Zealand library diploma to a UK MSc.
However, it is also expected to feed into the following:
- the development of TASI's services
- the Digital Picture research project
- the CLIC research project (http://clic.oucs.ox.ac.uk/), on which I
am a project consultant
- paper(s) for publication
I hope you will feel willing/able to participate in this research
exercise. The process shouldn't be too onerous and will hopefully
yield some interesting results. If, however, you fall into the
criteria above but do not wish to participate, please drop me a short
note anyway so I know this. I am also happy to provide more
information via email or phone 0117 928 7109.
With best wishes,
Grant
