Hi all,
We’re looking for some Roman to Early Medieval iron artefacts (preferably
spearheads or Anglo-Saxon style single edged swords) that have already been
examined previously by metallography, in order to do some further completely
non-destructive research.
As we all know museums aren't too willing to lend their valuable objects for
sampling and so not much metallographic analysis has ever been done here in the
Netherlands, and of course the situation is similar elsewhere.
Recently we tested a new non-destructive method on 12 spearheads and 2 saxes
from the Merovingian cemetery at Rhenen NL, but have got no proper
metallography data for comparison (and don’t want to ask the museum if we can
cut the objects, as that would defeat the purpose of the research being
non-destructive). We’ve got funding to do further work. What we’re looking for
now, are previously analysed objects to make a direct comparison between the
new method and the metallography, and also to compare with the results we have
from the Rhenen spearheads & saxes.
If anyone can offer any such material or any suggestions, please contact me,
off-list if you prefer.
Thanks in advance,
Matthijs
