This is not uncommon. The most recent comprehensive work, with full bibliography, on the corrosion of copper and bronze antiquities is by David Scott, published by the Getty Conservation Institute.

Subject: bronze alteration
I would greatly appreciate to have information or
published references to complete alteration of
bronze.
I can not find examples of bronze materials that
have been completely altered in soil conditions.
Tin bronze has gone COMPLETELY, and only cuprite,
cassiterite, and other secondary CU minerals are
found.
Please send examples or experimental studies of
similar occurrences.
Thanks
