Dear Member
Welcome to the late October / early November issue of 'News from the
BSA'. You were probably wondering where the October issue had got to.
October has been an extremely busy month in the BSA Office and the
e-Newsletter slowly moved down the list of immediate priorities,
although many of the items due to be circulated for information before
the end of October were uploaded onto the BSA webpages - see
www.britsoc.co.uk
I did report in my last e-mail (September 2005) that a small majority
of membership subscriptions remained unpaid. If you are one of these
members then you are sure to receive a telephone call from Hall
Associates over the coming weeks. Hall Associates are a UK based
partnership who have been appointed by the BSA to assist staff on how to
focus on maximising membership income and improving retention
performance.
1. Information Update
It's always a pleasant experience to begin with some good news. In
September the office mailed each member an Information Update Form with
a request to amend/update where appropriate. The response rate was and
still is phenomenal with 37% of the forms returned to date.
Congratulations to Professor James Beckford, University of Warwick who
was the recipient of the £50.00 gift voucher draw which took place on
the 31st October.
2. Discussion Forum
For various reasons the Discussion Forum within the Members Area of the
website (www.britsoc.co.uk) had been out of order for a number of
months.
I'm pleased to announce that this section of the website is now
functioning once more and we need members to log-in and post messages to
activate discussion threads.
Instructions on how to access Discussion Forum:
1. Log-in to the Members Area using your e-mail address and BSA
membership number.
2. Click Members Section from the left-hand menu bar.
3. Click Discussion Forum
4. Underneath the logo banner are 3 buttons - select 'Log In'
5. Re-enter your e-mail address and membership number (same details to
log-in to Members Area initially).
6. Click on 'BSA General Discussion' and then click the 'New Topic'
blue button to add.
3. Scottish Studies Study Group - New Members Welcome
In the process of revitalising the study group, and to facilitate a
more interactive, inclusive forum, the study group e-mail list has
transferred to a jiscmail server. This will provide a forum for
contacting group members and for discussing sociological issues relating
to Scotland that members wish to raise. It will also be a useful forum
for all members to disseminate information on research, seminars,
funding initiatives, policy developments, etc.
While in its infancy the jiscmail e-mail list consisted of members
actually based in Scotland, but anyone regardless of your geographic
location is welcome to join the study group and become involved in

4. A Scottish & Northern Narratives Network One-Day Conference
Friday 9 December, 11.00am - 4.30pm
University of Edinburgh
The conference will feature a set of short papers (30 minute
presentations and 15 minutes discussion), and also a closing plenary
session to discuss future Network events, which will be held alternately
in Newcastle and Edinburgh.
The conference will include tea and coffee and also lunch, as well as
abstracts. The cost will be £5 for students and unwaged people, and £10
for everyone else, to cover teas, coffees and lunches. To book a place

5. Interdisciplinary Conference on The Challenge to Global Social
Inquiry
to be held at the University of Birmingham.
his conference is designed as a workshop addressing four key themes
within global social inquiry:
1) national social science: a limit to global social inquiry?
2) subjects or object
s? power, participation, and social inquiry
3) secularism: a necessary condition for social inquiry?
4) disciplines: a limit to global social inquiry?
The speakers include: Ian Diamond (ESRC), Steve Fuller (Warwick), Ratna
Kapur (New Delhi), Greg McLennan (Bristol), Adam Seligman (Boston), Jill
Steans (Birmingham), Max Steuer (LSE), Peter Taylor (Loughborough).

6. Launch of 'Reseaching Students' Study Group
As this government and others re-conceptualise HE as a key site for
wealth generation in a global economy, this new Study Group aims to
contribute to
the growing critique of HE learning/teaching by reconfiguring
learning/teaching as research problems requiring critical exploration by
and
of students' learning/our teaching and the wider context in which this
learning/teaching occurs. This Study Group will be a sister to the
SRHE
Student Experience Network, convened by Professor Patrick Ainley. We
aim to expand the dialogue about HE learning and teaching between
sociologists of
education and educationalists through discussing papers/issues raised
at two joint meetings annually, and one meeting at each supporting
asociation's
conference. The Study Group will be formally launched at the 2006 BSA
Annual Conference. Patrick and I hope that papers from these meetings
can
contribute to our SRHE/OU Press book series, 'The Student Experience

7. Call for Papers Methodological Innovations On Line
Methodological Innovations on line is a new international peer reviewed
social research journal to be launched next April. It will publish high
quality papers in research methods and methodology from all social
science disciplines. Papers which focus on new methodological
approaches, or using traditional methodologies in new ways or
methodologies which cross disciplines are especially welcome. The
journal will publish peer reviewed papers and short discussion pieces
and will offer a 'rapid response' facility to encourage discussion of
papers published.
The journal aims to be progressive both in access and the means by
which it encourages those near the beginning of their careers to
publish.
Nevertheless each issue will contain papers by leading international
social science researchers.

8. The Holberg International Memorial Prize 2006
Call for Nomination 2006
The Ludvig Holberg Memorial Fund has the pleasure to call for
nominations for the Holberg International Memorial Prize for outstanding
scholarly work in the fields of the arts and humanities, social science,
law and theology 2006. The price has a value of NOK 4.5 million, approx.
EUR 575,000/US$ 700.000.
The prize was established by the Norwegian Government in 2003, and aims
to increase the society's awareness of the value of research within

Holberg Prize 2006
The nomination deadline is 15 February 2006. The winner of the Holberg
International Memorial Prize 2006 will be announced in September 2006

10. Eighth (and Ninth) Intensive Short Course in the
Biographic-Narrative-Interpretive Method (BNIM)
5 days for 6 people: 9-10 and 13-15 February 2006 in London (and June
2006)
Biographical (narrative) research is an expanding field in which the
present and past lived experience of individuals and groups is the focus
of attention. It lends itself to the understanding of the interaction of
'inner world' and 'outer world' dynamics in the studies of groups,
organisations, and regime and cultural change. However, systematic
training in biographic-narrative interviewing and in the systematic and
not just impressionistic interpretation of narrative interview material
is difficult to come by. Over the past seven years, we have been
successfully training PhD students, qualitative methods teachers and
professional researchers in
one such method: BNIM.
The course provides a training in doing BNIM biographic narrative
interviews, together with 'hands-on experience¹ of following BNIM
interpretation procedures. Students develop a sense of how their own
research projects might use such aspects and components. Taught by
Prue Chamberlayne and Tom Wengraf in North London., the course's small
number of students ensures close coaching and support for the intensive
work that is needed for you to fully acquire both the understanding of
principles and the practical capacity for proceeding with the
systematic practices involved in BNIM -- both for BNIM and for other
types of narrative interviewing and interpretation.
For those interested, a free 'Short Guide to BNIM: interviewing for
life-histories and lived experience' (with updated bibliography) is
available on request. Please indicate your institutional affiliation and
