CALL FOR PAPERS

ICI'06
The Second International Conference on Islam

"Dialogue vs. Conflict: Islam in a Globalized World"

March 24-25, 2006
Madison, Wisconsin, USA
http://2006.islamconf.org

Abstract submission deadline: January 20, 2006

The Second International Conference on Islam will be held at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA, on March 24-25, 2006. The
objective of the conference is to create an environment for the
discussion of various aspects of Islam in an academic setting and in a
non-speculative way. The conference will serve the purpose of bringing
together academics, scholars and researchers interested in different
aspects of Islam, and will provide an opportunity to share new
findings, approaches and research on Islam. Selected papers from the
conference will be published as a book.

Theme: Increasing connections and interdependencies among institutions
and peoples around the world direct our attention to globalization as
a central phenomenon of the contemporary era. From economy to culture
to environment, the great issues of our time require close attention
to the dynamic interactions among actors and stakeholders around the
world. It is commonly observed that all societies are now part of a
global system that is stitched together by far-reaching trade
protocols, governance covenants, and communication networks.
Although
this process of integration engenders dramatic new opportunities for
cooperation and development, it is also characterized by profound
inequities that breed dramatic new tensions and conflicts.
Globalization is furthermore characterized by challenges to previous
loyalties and affinities, as questions of belonging and citizenship
assume new meanings in an era of accelerating flows of people,
goods,
and capital across borders and boundari
es that were previously inviolable. In keeping with this perspective,
the theme of this year's conference will be "Dialogue vs. Conflict:
Islam in a Globalized World".

Scope: Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following:

    * Islam and Globalization
    * Islamic Movements in a Globalized World
    * Islam, Nation-state and Secularism
    * Islam and West: Dialogue vs Conflict of Civilizations
    * Roots of Dialogue and Conflict in Religious Texts
    * Islam and Modernity
    * Islam and Science

    * Negotiating Religious and National Identities
    * Case Study on Islam and Globalization: Fethullah Gulen's
