invites applications for its

2006-2007 Visiting Scholars Program

The Institute seeks visiting scholars to carry out projects in
humanities disciplines that will deepen understanding of and develop
pedagogical approaches to the program’s annual theme. We have titled
this year’s theme:

Medical Humanities Education

We welcome innovative proposals to enrich and advance medical humanities
education. Proposals may include theoretical or empirical research
regarding medical humanities education, curriculum development, or
artistic or creative projects that promote medical humanities education.
Visiting scholars will be invited to apply their ideas to teaching of
medical students, interns, and residents, graduate students, and medical
faculty or other health professionals in the UTMB community.

Visiting scholars will be selected on the basis of the significance of
the proposed project and their relevance to the program’s announced
theme, the strength of their proposals outlining a plan of work for the
period of residency, and the likelihood that projects will enhance the
Institute’s teaching and research programs and contribute to the
visiting scholar’s future teaching and writing. We are seeking scholars
with a Ph.D. or other terminal degree in their disciplines from the full
range of the humanities. Graduate students are not eligible.

Visitors are expected to carry out their proposed project at the
Institute and to participate in its multidisciplinary work (colloquia,
symposia). Periods of residency may range from three or four months to
eight months (one or two semesters). Stipends amount to $4,000 per
month. Limited benefits may be available but travel subsidies are not
included.

opportunity, your plans for the period of residency you propose

Endowed in 1998 by the Sealy & Smith Foundation and the National
Endowment for the Humanities, the Visiting Scholars Program will bring
the Institute competitively selected humanities scholars to engage in
programs of study and teaching. The term “humanities” includes, but is
not limited to, the study of the following: ethics; history;
jurisprudence; language; literature; philosophy; religion; the arts; and
those aspects of social sciences which have humanistic content and
employ humanistic methods. We encourage diverse cultural perspectives.

The Institute is a teaching and research center that focuses the lens of
humanities disciplines on medical practice, biomedical research, and
health policy. Institute faculty teach in the medical school, conduct
individual and collaborative research, consult in UTMB’s clinical
facilities, and develop health-care policy. The Institute offered the
first multidisciplinary program in the U.S. leading to an M.A., Ph.D.,
or a M.D./Ph.D. in medical humanities. A Ph.D./J.D. option is also
available in cooperation with the University of Houston’s Health Law and
Policy Institute.
