At Sussex we ask all students to register online.
Online registration is completed via a sub-system of our student portal and
student shave to complete all task on a checklist. These tasks include:
confirming personal details, confirming contact information, we show fees
and show fees fee splits and sponsor information, sign off off formalities
such as a data protection statements and sign up to the University
regulations, pay any rent or fees due (credit /debit card or Direct Debit
online & we run a student accounts hotline to cater for those who don't
want or can't make online payment arrangements).
All of these steps must be completed in order for the student to complete
registration online. The results vary from 70% of new Undergraduates
registered before they arrive, returning Undergraduates do less well before
arrival but the figures pick up quickly once they arrive back and are
reminded by friends that their Student Loan is triggered for payment once
they have registered.
We don't allow changes to key data items such as names but provide 'mailto'
links for students to use if they need to inform our registry offices of
such changes. Where data is input/changed the information flows straight
into our database - no additional manual checks are used because we limit
the range of data they can change in the first place.
For new students we issue IT services usernames and passwords as part of
the process based on an ID number which is mailed to students in late
August coupled with the old favourites of Surname and Date of Birth.
The rates for Overseas students varies massively mainly due to the
availability of acceptable means of payment over the web for students from
some countries but the efficiencies gained overall allow us to spend more
time dealing with these students once they arrive.
Overall it has been a great success and we have operated it this way for 2
years.
We've not tried module registration online and have no plans to.
