Subject: Re: Capping result grades for resubmitting or deferral students
Importance: High
At JMU students who are referred have their marks capped at 40% [the
minimum pass mark]. Students who are deferred will not be capped. [NB
Deferral is normally decided by the assessment board -usually as the
result of mitigating circumstances. Its not an option that students can
just choose for themselves.

Subject: Capping result grades for resubmitting or deferral students
The Open University will soon be considering the capping of grades for
resubmitting or deferral students. The rationale is that those students
will have had longer than any students who will have completed during
the normal time span and therefore would be unfairly advantaged over
them. Sometimes external examiners have referred to this in their
reports and asked for it to be made impossible to get more than a grade
4 pass in these cases.
Do any other institutions cap the result grades for resubmitting and
deferral students?
I should be grateful to know of your policies on this, both in the case
of capping or in the case of not doing so.
Many thanks
