We happen to use the same kit in our lab.
Would it be possible to get the lot number of the kit that gave the two
false positives ?
Thanks

Just looked at the latest NEQAS report (under a pile of papers on my desk),
and if the kit is the Applied Biotech Surestep hCG Combo, then there is
definatley a problem with the kit. Quoted detection limit 20.
Sample X193 (50 u/L hCG added) 5 positive and 6 negative
Sample X194 (Pregnancy Urine value around 7000) 8 positive and 3 negative.
I'd steer clear of this one, and possibly report them, brings back memories
another kit in the last couple of years.

Subject: 'Surestrip' Pregnancy test
One of our A&E consultants has enquired about possible reasons for two
false negatives on this kit.
Both were done in the early hours of the morning, one on a patient 1/52
after missed period and the other in a patient who was around 8 weeks
pregnant. The kit insert states that urine taken at any time is OK, but
obviously an early morning specimen is preferred and a very dilute urine
might be a problem particularly in very early pregnancy. It claims to
detect hCG concentrations of 20 mIU/ml or more.
In the absence of any further information (interfering substances crossed
my mind) I suggested training/competency - possibly someone who was not
familiar with the procedure doing it during the night under pressure.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks
