Dear All
The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and Medical Research
Council (MRC) sponsors interdisciplinary studentships and post doctoral
fellowships for students resident in the UK or European Union wishing to
study a range of issues that span the interface between medical and
social issues: details are provided below.
The Centre for Disability Studies (CDS) at the University of Leeds would
welcome appropriate applications from eligible candidates. Details of
the application procedures can be obtained from the following website:

Best wishes

INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH STUDENTSHIPS

Closing Date: 1 March 2004

The ESRC and MRC joint Research Studentship and Postdoctoral Fellowship
scheme has been developed to fund interdisciplinary research students

asp> and post-doctoral fellows
<http://www.esrc.ac.uk/ESRCContent/postgradfunding/esrcmrc_postdoctoral_
fellowships.asp> whose research is of interest to both Councils and
which requires the combined approaches of both the medical and social
sciences. 20 research students and 11 post-doctoral fellows were offered
awards under this scheme in 2004.
Applications to this scheme must address the interests of both the ESRC
and the MRC and must be genuinely interdisciplinary in approach. Whilst
applications are invited from any sub-discipline of the social or
medical sciences the following areas have been identified as of
particular interest to the two Councils: stem cell research; genomics;
obesity; occupational health; the management and delivery of health
services; public health issues (including issues relating to both
physical and mental health); deprivation and the developing world;
sexual health; preventative intervention; chronic disease management;
interaction between the lay and medical community, and population and
health behaviour.
Applications for both studentships and post-doctoral fellowships should
be submitted by 1 March 2005 to the ESRC, who will be administering the
competitions. It is essential that all documentation is returned to the
ESRC and not to MRC.
