My reaction would be similar. I'd remind the requestor that there was a retention policy in place that stipulated retention times and we were obliged by law to comply. If however the request was just to ensure that the policy was indeed being followed and that we should ensure unwanted correspondence is destroyed as per the schedule, then we would clearly comply with the request. If there was a suggestion of press involvement, I would refer them to the Records Manager and TNA for comment.
Regards,
Eldin.

Subject: Deletion of third party records
Hi Listers!
If a client, for argument's sake a government department, were to ring
you up and ask you to delete all correspondence relating to your
transactions with them in a 'rationalisation' exercise, what would be
your reaction? Delete? Phone up the ICO? The Sun?
I'd advise staff to keep the records - they are our transactions as well
after all - and advise the requesting department that the information
within would only be released if there were no applicable FOI
exemptions. Interested to hear others' views!
Happy Christmas!
