medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I believe Richard Landes said: Rev is not in most greek NTs until the 12th cn
Corrrect me if I am wrong.
Otherwise, I have two interesting questions:
1) 'Why is the word "most" in there?' 'Most' early mss of the New Testament
were not complete manuscripts anyway. Is there really anyway of validating
this statement? Or does it even make sense since it is not like everything
else was always included in mss but only Revelation was left out? There are
plenty of early mss of Revelation. Nevertheless, on the surface, it appears
true. Can anyone provide some further support for this statement?
2) Where then does the millenialism come from that was so clearly voiced around
Y1K in documents such as 'Wulfstan's Address to the English?' Why did they
think that there was something likely to fulfill prophecy in the year 1,000?
What would be very interesting would be if we could find some support and
evidence that the millenialism did not come directly from the book of
Revelation as is generally believed! This is possible as the 1,000 years
appears to me to be another of those pre-Christian ideas which were subsummed
by the early church.
What other medieval documents talk about 1,000 year millenial period or as if a
1,000 year period were coming to a close with Y1K, which might not have come
from the book of Revelation?
