Master of Science in Industrial Ecology
at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)
Industrial Ecology is a relatively new approach towards studying and
solving environmental problems. It focuses on understanding how
resources are used and emissions produced in society, applying the
metaphor of ecology to industrial systems. Based on an understanding of
the connection between nature, production systems, and consumption, it
develops strategies and tools to reduce emissions and resource use.
Industrial Ecology is relevant to both industrialized and rapidly
industrializing countries.
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology has been one of the
world leaders in developing an educational program in industrial
ecology. NTNU started offering courses in the field in 1993 and had a
study program in place by 1998. Today it is offering both an
International MSc program (taught in English) and the largest PhD
program of its kind.
The two-year MSc program provides students with a solid foundation in
Industrial Ecology and provides specialization in one of three areas:
1. Environmental Systems Analysis
2. Strategic Design of Product Systems
3. Environmental Politics and Management
The Norwegian government supports this education and provides
scholarships to a select number of highly qualified students from
developing countries and countries of Central- and Eastern Europe.
Deadline for a preliminary application (which is required for the
scholarship) is 15 December 2004. The deadline for the complete
application is 1 February 2005. More information is available from
