7th International Symposium
on Substance Abuse Treatment
November, 25-27th 2004.
21st Century Drug Free Treatment?
Between Evidence and Belief
The Conference Theme:
The drug-free treatment of drug misusers appears to be at a crossroads
today. In terms of results, the twentieth century's methods of drug-free
treatment have not, it seems, entirely lived up to the optimistic belief
placed in them by the proponents of the various treatment ideologies. Back
in the early 1970s Hunt et al. found in a review that 20-25% of heroin
misusers were still drug-free one year after discharge from treatment. This
figure does not appear to have changed significantly in the intervening 30
years.
Although the drug-free treatment of drug misusers probably is no less
effective than the treatment of a great many other "modern" conditions (such
as diabetes, asthma, hypertension etc.), the questions remain "is it really
not more effective than in the early 70'ies and if - how come?" and "if it's
true - what are we going to do?"
With these questions in mind we have chosen to name this symposium
"21st Century Drug Free Treatment? Between Evidence and Belief".
We would like to invite researchers and practitioners to present their
research results and their points of view concerning the topics listed below
The themes of the symposium:
* What is drug-free treatment in the 21st century
* Evidence based treatment or more experienced based methods
* Motivation, readiness and suitability
* Coordination and continuity
* What is professionalism?
* Attitudes, beliefs and spirituality
* Is practise research resistant or is research
practise-resistant?
* How to implement research-finding to practice
* The art of creating a client?
* Efficiency and efficacy
* Is it all about policy?
